Materials

  • D-Rib / Larva Lace (body) Pale yellow d rib larva lace (1 length)
  • Dubbing (rear butt) Red / orange dubbing (tiny pinch)
  • Foam strip (head/post) Yellow mm foam (1 narrow strip)
  • Elk hair (wing) Bleached / light elk hair (1 small bunch)
  • Rooster hackle Ginger / cream rooster hackle (1 feather)
  • Dry-fly dubbing (head) Pale yellow dubbing (pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base and dub a tiny red butt at the bend to suggest the sally's egg sac.
  2. Tie in the pale-yellow D-Rib and wrap a segmented body forward to the 65% mark; tie off and trim.
  3. Tie a narrow yellow foam strip on top pointing forward over the eye for the post and folded-back head.
  4. Stack light elk hair and tie it in as a downwing over the body, tips to the bend.
  5. Stand the foam up as a post and wrap a ginger hackle around its base parachute-style, 4-5 turns.
  6. Gather the hackle fibers to the sides and lock them with figure-8 wraps so they splay out like outriggers for a stable upright float.
  7. Dub a small thorax, fold the foam back to form the head, tie down behind the eye, whip finish and cement.
