Orange Snipe

Dry Fly · Trout · Grayling · Beginner · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Wet-fly / spider hook, 14-16
  • Thread Orange 8/0

Materials

  • Silk / thread (body) Orange floss (as body)
  • Snipe covert feather (hackle) Dark mottled snipe covert feather (1 small feather)

How to tie it

  1. Run the orange silk down to the bend and back in touching turns to form a slim, lightly built body ending at the 75% mark.
  2. Select a small dark snipe marginal-covert feather and tie it in by the tip at the head, good side facing forward.
  3. Take just one and a half to two sparse turns of the snipe hackle, then secure and trim the stem.
  4. Stroke the fibers back and down, build a tiny neat head, whip finish and add a pin drop of cement.
