Materials

  • Oval silver tinsel (tag) Silver oval tinsel (few turns)
  • Floss (tag) Orange floss (few turns)
  • Golden pheasant crest (tail) Golden yellow pheasant crest (1 feather)
  • Hackle barbs (tail) Red neck hackle (small bunch)
  • Ostrich herl (butt) Black ostrich herl (1 herl)
  • Embossed tinsel (body) Silver oval tinsel (1 length)
  • Oval tinsel (rib) Silver oval tinsel (1 length)
  • Bucktail (wing) Pale tan / natural bucktail (1 sparse bunch)
  • Hackle (collar) Bright orange hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread and at the bend form a tag of a few turns of oval silver tinsel followed by a short band of orange floss.
  2. Tie in a golden pheasant crest curving up as the tail with a small bunch of red hackle barbs over it, then form a butt of one turn of black ostrich herl.
  3. Tie in the oval rib, then the embossed silver tinsel, and wrap a smooth flat body forward to the 80% mark; tie off.
  4. Spiral the oval rib forward over the body in 5 evenly spaced turns and tie off.
  5. Tie in a sparse pale tan bucktail wing on top, extending to the tip of the tail.
  6. Wrap an orange hackle as a sparse collar, two or three turns, and sweep the fibers back and down.
  7. Build a neat black head, whip finish and lacquer.
