Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 18-22
  • Thread Fluorescent orange 8/0 or 70-denier

Materials

  • Tying thread (forms body) Fluorescent orange thread (as body)
  • Rooster hackle Grizzly hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread two eye-lengths back and wrap a slim, even orange body all the way to the bend, then back up to the one-third point.
  2. Select a grizzly hackle with barbs about one and a half hook-gaps long; strip the lower barbs to bare a short stem.
  3. Tie in the hackle by the bare stem at the one-third point.
  4. Palmer the hackle forward in open, evenly spaced spiral wraps over the orange body to just behind the eye.
  5. Secure the tip with a couple of tight thread wraps, trim the excess, whip finish and add a tiny drop of head cement.
