Olsen's Holographic Ice Cream Cone

Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/chironomid hook, 12-16
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • White bead White (tungsten or glass) bead (1)
  • Body Black (thread or holographic) (as needed)
  • Holographic tinsel rib Silver flashabou (1 strand)
  • Antron gills (optional) White poly yarn (tiny pinch)
  • UV resin Clear uv resin (thin coat)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a white bead onto the hook and seat it against the eye; the white head is the 'ice cream' of the cone.
  2. Start black thread behind the bead and wrap a smooth base to the bend.
  3. Tie in a strand of holographic silver tinsel for the rib.
  4. Wrap a slim black body forward to just behind the bead, keeping it slender.
  5. Counter-wrap the holographic rib in 5-6 evenly spaced turns, then tie off and snip.
  6. Optionally add a turn or two of white antron just behind the bead as gills.
  7. Whip finish and coat the body with a thin layer of UV resin for a glassy chironomid sheen; the white bead reads as the pupa's breathing filaments.
