Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet fly / spider hook, 14-16
  • Thread Greenish-yellow (Pearsall's Gossamer) 8/0

Materials

  • Silk Greenish-yellow Pearsall's Gossamer, waxed (full body)
  • Body The waxed greenish-yellow silk (shank)
  • Hackle Feather from a starling's quill (starling wing covert) (1 turn)

How to tie it

  1. Run the greenish-yellow silk from behind the eye to above the barb and back to the two-thirds mark; the silk itself is the body.
  2. Tie in a soft grey covert from a starling's wing by the tip at the two-thirds mark.
  3. Take one sparse turn of hackle and secure with two turns of silk.
  4. Stroke the fibres back, build a small head, whip finish and varnish.
