Classic Recipe

  • Hook standard dry/wet fly, 14-16
  • Thread bright yellow silk silk / 8/0

Materials

  • Tag Gold tinsel (1)
  • Tail Bright red cock hackle fibers (several)
  • Body Bright yellow silk (as needed)
  • Wings Starling, upright and broad (1 pair)
  • Hackle Furnace cock (1)

How to tie it

  1. Start the yellow silk and wind a small tag of gold tinsel at the bend.
  2. Tie in a few bright red cock hackle fibers for the tail, about one shank length long.
  3. Wind the bright yellow silk forward to form a slim body up to the two-thirds mark.
  4. Tie in a broad pair of starling wing slips, set upright and divided.
  5. Tie in a furnace cock hackle behind the wings and wind 3-4 turns, some behind and some in front, then sweep back slightly.
  6. Build a small head and whip finish.
