Materials
Fine weighting wire wrap
Brass wire (rib)
Amber dubbing (abdomen)
Peacock dubbing (thorax/legs)
Tungsten bead (optional, for a heavier version)
How to tie it
Lay about ten wraps of the weighting wire on the scud-hook shank, keeping it about half a hook-eye back from the front for the right taper; break off the excess with a fingernail.
Start black thread between the hook eye and the wire, wrap back and forth into the wire to lock it, then bring the thread behind the wire.
Tie in a long strand of brass wire and bind it down along the shank back to the apex of the bend; leave the long tag hanging.
Twist sparse amber dubbing onto the thread and wrap a tapered abdomen forward (thin at the rear, building thicker over the weighted wire) stopping a little past the hook point.
Wind the brass-wire rib forward in five to six evenly spaced turns, tie off tightly and helicopter-spin the wire until it snaps off clean.
Form a dubbing loop, load it with peacock dubbing, attach a spinner/hackle pliers and twist it closed, then wrap it forward over the remaining weighted wire as a spiky thorax and legs, combing the strands back toward the bend as you go.
Tie off the loop and trim, pull back and lock down any front-facing peacock strands, and build a small thread head tapering to the eye.
Whip finish over the head and add a small drop of head cement.
