Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL dry fly, 8-10
  • Thread Orange 6/0

Materials

  • Dubbing / Ice Dub Burnt orange (body)
  • 2mm foam Tan / brown mm foam (foam shellback)
  • Deer or elk hair Natural deer hair (down wing)
  • Dry hackle Brown hackle (front collar)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread at the bend and tie in a strip of 2mm foam by one end, pointing to the rear.
  2. Dub a full burnt-orange body forward to the 70% mark.
  3. Pull the foam forward over the top as a buoyant shellback and bind it down at the 70% mark; leave a short tab or trim.
  4. Stack deer hair and tie in a down wing over the back reaching the bend.
  5. Wind 2-3 turns of brown hackle as a front collar and tie off.
  6. Whip finish at the eye and cement.
