October Caddis Adult Morrish

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL dry fly (e.g. TFS 5212), 8-10
  • Thread Orange 140 denier

Materials

  • 2mm fly foam Orange foam strip (segmented body)
  • 2mm fly foam Tan fly tying foam (lip / head)
  • Saddle hackle Brown saddle hackle (palmered)
  • Elk hair Natural deer hair (wing)

How to tie it

  1. On a needle, build the body first: lay an orange foam strip and bind it in segments, two soft compressing wraps then 4-5 firm wraps per segment, until you have about 6 segments; half-hitch and slide the foam body off the needle.
  2. Slide the foam body onto the hook, pushing the point through the front so it seats along the shank; start orange thread.
  3. Tie in a brown saddle hackle and palmer it through the exposed thorax in open turns.
  4. Stack a clump of elk hair and tie it in as a down wing over the body, reaching the bend.
  5. Tie a strip of tan foam forward over the front as a head/lip, then trim the nose to length and trim the side edges.
  6. Whip finish in front of the tan foam and cement the wraps.
