Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL curved nymph (e.g. TMC 2457), 10-16
  • Thread Black 140 denier

Materials

  • Brass bead Silver or gold slotted tungsten bead (1 (matched to hook))
  • Lead-free wire (underbody weight)
  • Goose biots Gray / tan / black goose biots (tail, wingcase, legs)
  • Ultra wire (Brassie) Red wire (rib)
  • Hare's ear / Hareline dubbing Gray or tan hare s ear hareline dubbing (abdomen and thorax)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a brass bead to the eye, lay 8-10 turns of lead-free wire behind it, shove the wraps into the bead, and start thread.
  2. Split two goose biots at the bend for a forked tail about one gap wide.
  3. Tie in red Ultra wire for the rib, then dub a slim tapered abdomen over the back two-thirds.
  4. Counter-rib the abdomen with 4-5 evenly spaced turns of red wire and tie off.
  5. Tie in a goose biot flat over the back for a wingcase, tips pointing forward over the eye.
  6. Dub a fuller thorax, pull the biot back as the wingcase, and pinch a biot leg down each side angled back to the hook point.
  7. Build a small collar behind the bead, whip finish, and cement.
