Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL-3XL dry/nymph (e.g. Daiichi 1270 or TMC 200R), 6-8
  • Thread Orange 6/0

Materials

  • Fine wire Gold wire (rib)
  • Trilobal / Antron dubbing Golden stone (body and thorax)
  • Saddle/dry hackle Brown saddle hackle (2 (body and thorax))
  • Calf tail Tan / root beer hair (wing)

How to tie it

  1. Start orange thread and run it to the bend; tie in fine gold wire for the rib.
  2. Dub a slightly tapered golden-stone body over the back half of the shank.
  3. Tie in a brown hackle where the body ends and palmer it back over the abdomen in 5-6 open turns.
  4. Counter-wrap the gold wire forward through the hackle to lock it, then helicopter off the excess.
  5. Tie in a calf-tail wing at the 60% mark, tips angled back to the bend, and secure the butts.
  6. Tie in a second brown hackle at the wing base and dub the thorax to the eye.
  7. Wind the thorax hackle 4-5 turns forward, tie off, whip finish, and cement.
