Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly, straight eye, 20-24
  • Thread Black 14/0

Materials

  • Tying thread Black thread (body)
  • Deer hair Natural dun/gray deer hair (small pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a smooth thread body from behind the eye to the bend and back, keeping it slim; the thread is the whole abdomen.
  2. At the 70% mark tie in a tiny stacked pinch of deer hair, tips forward, and post it upright with banked turns.
  3. Spread the wing into a 180° comparadun fan so the body lies flush in the film.
  4. Take a few figure-8 thread turns to seat the wing, then whip finish at the eye and add a speck of cement.
