No See Um Brown Drake

Dry Fly · Midge · Trout · Beginner · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly, straight eye, 10-12
  • Thread Brown 8/0

Materials

  • Superfine dubbing Brown drake / chocolate (abdomen)
  • Deer hair Natural brown/dun deer hair (wing clump)
  • Tying thread Brown thread (underbody)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread and dub a slim, tapered brown-drake abdomen from the bend forward to the 65% mark.
  2. Clean and stack a clump of deer hair and tie it in standing upright at the 65% mark, tips forward, then post it with banked turns.
  3. Fan the wing into a 180° comparadun across the top of the shank so the body sits flush in the film.
  4. Dub a short thorax and figure-8 around the wing base to seat it upright. Keep the dubbing sparse.
  5. Build a small head, whip finish, and add a drop of cement.
