Deer hair (overwing) Bleached elk hair (One small clump, cleaned and stacked)
Superfine dubbing Adams gray (A wisp, at the hackle base)
Hackle Medium dun (light dun colored with a dun marker works) (One feather, three turns)
How to tie it
Start the dun thread at, or just in front of, the midpoint of the shank and clip the excess.
Tie in the light gray Span Flex at the midpoint and wrap the thread rearward over it under firm tension, taking it a little way around the bend.
Return the thread to the front, add a half hitch, hang the bobbin in the cradle and wrap the Span Flex forward in touching turns using the rotary feature, keeping the body smooth with no lumps. Stop just past halfway, secure with thread and trim.
Align the tips of three CDC feathers on the bench, then tie them in as an underwing reaching to about the bend of the hook. Use a couple of firm wraps, the stems are slippery.
Tie in a cleaned and stacked clump of bleached deer hair with the tips just past the CDC: two loose wraps, pull tight, add a few tight wraps, then lift the bundle in thirds and take tight wraps underneath each section.
Clip the butt ends off, then grip the wing tips and bind the remaining stubs down smooth, pushing everything back if it crowds the eye.
Touch a wisp of Adams gray Superfine dubbing onto the thread at the front. It gives the hackle something to bite on, and add a half hitch to hold everything in place.
Wrap a dun hackle three turns, each in front of the last, secure with thread and trim.
Push the fibers back off the eye with your thumbnail and finish with a few half hitches (easier than a whip finish in a crowded eye).
