No Mercy Midge

Emerger · Midge · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2X-short wide-gap hook (e.g. TMC 2488), #18-24
  • Thread black 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Thread body Black thread (body)
  • Fine wire Silver wire (rib)
  • CDC Natural dun cdc feather (short tuft (wing/collar))
  • UV resin Clear uv resin (body coat)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread and lay a thin, smooth body to the bend, tying in a strand of fine silver wire at the bend.
  2. Return the thread to behind the eye, building a slightly tapered body.
  3. Counter-wrap the silver wire in 5-6 open turns for segmentation and tie off.
  4. Coat the wire-ribbed body with a thin, bone-dry layer of UV resin and cure. The shiny shell mimics the midge's exoskeleton.
  5. Tie in a short tuft of CDC over the top behind the eye as an emerging wing/collar.
  6. Whip finish and snip.
