Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry / hopper hook, #8-12
  • Thread black 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • 2mm foam Black craft foam mm (1 strip (deck body))
  • 2mm foam Orange foam strip (small (hot spot))
  • Rooster hackle Brown or grizzly hackle (1 (collar))
  • Barred rubber legs Black/orange rubber legs (2 sets)
  • Poly / calf wing Bleached white hair (1 clump)
  • Flash Pearl flashabou (few strands)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base and bind a strip of black 2mm foam at the bend for the underbody deck, leaving a short stub over the bend.
  2. Wrap the thread forward and tie the foam down again at the 50% and 30% marks to form body segments.
  3. Tie in barred rubber legs on each side at mid-body.
  4. Tie in a bleached white poly (or calf) wing plus a few strands of flash over the back for visibility.
  5. Wind a hackle collar of 3-4 turns at the front for flotation and tie off.
  6. Fold a foam overwing/head forward over the hackle and bind it behind the eye; add an orange foam hot-spot on top.
  7. Whip finish under the foam head, then trim the wing to just past the bend and the legs to length.
