Reference Recipe

  • Hook wide-gap saltwater hook plus a trailer hook, #2/0-3/0
  • Thread white or clear mono 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Knottable wire 1x7, ~90 lb (core/trailer link)
  • Trailer hook Saltwater (1)
  • Mylar tubing Pearl mylar tinsel (body)
  • Yak hair White base, green/chartreuse over (long clumps)
  • Flash Pearl/green flash (few strands)
  • Stick-on eyes Silver d eyes mm (1 pair)
  • UV resin / epoxy Clear uv resin (head)

How to tie it

  1. Lash a length of 90 lb 1x7 wire along the shank and back to a trailer hook so the fly can be built long and slim; secure it top and bottom.
  2. Slide pearl mylar tubing over the shank and wire and bind it at the eye and at the rear.
  3. Tie in long yak hair, a full 2-3 shank lengths, distributed evenly over the top and sides for a slender, tapering profile.
  4. Layer green/chartreuse yak hair over the white base, plus a few strands of flash, for the back.
  5. Sweep all the fibers rearward and bind the front cleanly.
  6. Build a tapered thread head and whip finish.
  7. Add stick-on eyes and lock the head with UV resin or epoxy; cure.
