How to tie it
Measure metallic tape from just behind the eye back to level with the hook point, peel the backing and fold it over the shank, then trim it to a belly shape with straight and curved scissors. Cutting the belly rather than leaving a rectangle is what gives the finished fly a minnow's profile from the side.
Slide pearl Mylar tubing with the insert removed over the taped body, secure the rear behind the tape with a dozen wraps and whip finish, then restart in front, stretch the Mylar tight over the tape and tie it off. The tube over tape is the scale pattern. Nothing else in the fly does that job.
Figure-eight the 3D eyes in underneath, between the hook eye and the tape, and cement them. Weighted eyes underneath give the fly a jigging, wounded-baitfish action on the pause.
Build the first wings, white polar fiber behind the eyes with the tips level with the bend, then a second bunch underneath back to the hook point. Trim the butts flush with the eyes and cement. Then spin bluish white dub in a split thread and wrap it behind, between and in front of the eyes to bury all those trimmed ends.
Layer the rest of the wing in stages, each section slightly shorter than the last so the whole thing tapers: fine pearl flash, white flashed synthetic over it, more white polar fiber underneath, then two strands of pearl Flashabou folded over the thread on each side.
Bind everything back with a dozen wraps behind the eyes, cover the white thread with red for a gill collar, cement, then dub a second bluish white section forward and add black polar fiber on top, a small red rabbit strip throat underneath, and three or four peacock herls over the black.
Finish with grizzly hackle tips along each side, slightly shorter than the top wing. Trim the butts, singe any strands crossing the eye with a lighter, cover the wraps with black thread, and build the head up with thin cement first and a final gloss coat once dry.
