Classic Recipe

  • Hook standard wet fly / sproat (e.g. Mustad 3906), 6-12
  • Thread claret (or red) 8/0

Materials

  • Tag Flat gold tinsel (small)
  • Tail Three black hackle barbs (3)
  • Body Yellow floss (full shank)
  • Hackle Ginger hen (long, flexible), tied wet as a collar/beard (1)
  • Wing Grey mallard flank, rolled (matched slip)
  • Head Claret/red material (small)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a claret thread base and form a small flat gold tag above the barb.
  2. Tie in a tail of three black hackle barbs.
  3. Wrap a smooth yellow floss body forward.
  4. Wind or tie in a ginger hen hackle wet-style as a soft collar/beard swept down.
  5. Set a rolled slip of grey mallard flank as a low wet-fly wing over the body.
  6. Whip finish a small claret head and cement.
