Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry hook (e.g. TMC 100), #14-16
  • Thread yellow 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • 2mm foam Yellow mm foam (1 slim strip)
  • Foam or thread butt Red craft foam mm (tiny (optional egg sac))
  • Elk hair Bleached elk hair (1 clump (wing))
  • Rooster hackle Brown hackle (1)
  • Rooster hackle Grizzly hackle (1)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base; if desired, add a tiny red foam or thread butt at the bend, since Sallies show a reddish egg sac.
  2. Bind a thin strip of yellow 2mm foam in at the bend.
  3. Wrap the foam forward in overlapping turns to the 70% mark for a segmented body; tie off and trim.
  4. Tie in a bleached elk downwing at 70%, tips to the bend, and trim the butts short.
  5. Tie in one brown and one grizzly hackle.
  6. Wind both together in 4-5 turns at the front and tie off.
  7. Whip finish and cement.
