Wrap eight or ten turns of .020 lead wire over the middle of the Hanak 300 shank, leaving room at each end to taper down, and break the ends off.
Start black UNI 8/0 behind the eye and use the tag to guide the thread over the lead, tucking the last end back down onto the bare shank; cut the tag, then work back and forth over the lead - you are filling the gaps, not covering it.
Tie a short tuft of White Z-Lon in up front as the claspers, bumping up off the lead so it helps smooth the taper, and leave it hanging back over the bend.
Set the 3X tippet rib on top of the hook and let the thread roll it to the far side, then wrap back over it so it is anchored along that far side. Anchored there it will not lift the casing when you rib.
Cut a strip of olive Fly Specks Thinskin just over half a hook gap wide, peel it off the paper backing, and bind it in at the back edge of the lead, wrapping right down to the base of the tail so there is no space between the two.
Dub olive Sow Scud dubbing from the base of the tail forward up onto the lead, building a fat robust body, then add a touch more to shape a consistent taper at the front, leaving a short bare stretch for the ostrich.
Strip the end of a thick natural gray ostrich herl, tie it in like a hackle, wrap it forward in open turns for the legs, tie off just behind the eye and trim; the herl is soft enough to fold back out of the way.
Pull the Thinskin over the top, bring the thread over it and pull straight down so it buckles around the hook, anchoring with three or four turns; err slightly toward your near side and the rib will centre it.
Start the mono rib at the bend and pull really tight to crease deep segments, keeping the turns fairly tight, up to the back edge of the ostrich; take one steep angled turn forward to make a larger thorax segment, then divide what is left in half again, pull down tight, and tie off. Trim the mono, then trim the Thinskin with a couple of cuts rather than one.
Build a neat thread head, whip finish right over the top and trim the thread.
Trim the tail to a short brush, pick the dubbing down the sides with a dubbing brush or velcro and snip off any stray long fibers, then colour the last two segments across the top of the wing case with a black marker to make the thorax.
