  • Hook 3XL streamer hook (e.g. TMC 5263), #4-8
  • Thread brown or olive 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Lead dumbbell eyes Painted orange dumbbell eyes (1 pair)
  • Pheasant tail / moose Natural pheasant tail fibers (antennae)
  • Grizzly hen hackle tips Grizzly hackle (2 (claws))
  • SLF / Antron dubbing Crayfish olive (body)
  • Grizzly saddle hackle Grizzly hackle (1 (palmered legs))
  • Wire Copper wire (counter-rib)

How to tie it

  1. Bind lead dumbbell eyes on top of the shank near the bend so the fly rides hook-point up and dives that end first, crayfish flee backward.
  2. At the bend tie in a few strands of pheasant/moose as antennae and two grizzly hen tips flaring outward as claws.
  3. Tie in a grizzly saddle hackle and a length of wire, then dub a shaggy crayfish-olive body from the bend up to the eye.
  4. Palmer the hackle forward in 5-6 open turns for legs.
  5. Counter-wrap the wire forward through the hackle in 5-6 turns to lock the legs, then tie off.
  6. Build a neat head at the eye, whip finish, and cement.
