Reference Recipe

  • Hook 3XL streamer hook (e.g. TMC 5263), #4-8
  • Thread olive 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Lead dumbbell eyes Red dumbbell eyes (1 pair (medium))
  • Marabou Sculpin olive (short tail)
  • SLF / Bruiser blend dubbing Sculpin olive (body + head)
  • Webby grizzly / soft hackle Grizzly-olive webby soft hackle (1 (palmered))
  • Hen hackle tips Mottled hen feather (2 (pectoral fins))

How to tie it

  1. Bind medium lead eyes on top of the shank at the front third so the fly rides hook-point up.
  2. At the bend tie in a short, sparse marabou tail. Sculpins are stubby, so keep it stubby.
  3. Tie in a webby soft hackle and dub a tapered sculpin-olive body forward to just behind the eyes.
  4. Palmer the soft hackle forward in 4-5 open turns for pulsing legs and tie off behind the eyes.
  5. Tie a splayed pair of hen hackle tips flat against each side as the broad pectoral fins.
  6. Dub a bushy head, figure-8'd around the eyes, to fill out the wide sculpin skull.
  7. Whip finish at the eye and cement.
