Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry hook (e.g. TMC 100), #18-22
  • Thread olive-dun 8/0 (70 denier) or finer

Materials

  • Microfibbets Dun microfibbets (3-4 (split tail))
  • Superfine dubbing BWO / olive (body + thorax)
  • CDC feather Dun cdc feather (1 (puff wing))

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. Tie in 3-4 microfibbets as a split tail about one shank long, splayed into a wide V for flotation.
  3. Dub a slim, tapered abdomen forward to the 65% mark.
  4. To build the dense 'puff,' gather the tips of a single CDC feather, fold them back on themselves, and tie the doubled clump in upright at 65%. Folding one feather gives a full wing without bulk at the base.
  5. Stand the wing up with a few thread turns around its base.
  6. Dub a small thorax fore and aft of the wing.
  7. Whip finish, add a pinhead of cement at the head, and trim the wing to about one shank tall.
