Naked Stimulator

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 3XL dry hook (e.g. TMC 200R), #8-14
  • Thread orange or yellow 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Elk hair Natural deer hair (2 clumps (tail + wing))
  • Superfine / Antron dubbing Amber-yellow superfine antron dubbing (body + thorax)
  • Grizzly rooster hackle Grizzly hackle (1 (thorax only))

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. Stack a small clump of elk hair and tie it in as a tail about a half shank long at the bend.
  3. Dub a tapered, slightly rough abdomen forward to the 65% mark. Leave it bare of palmered body hackle. That omission is what makes it 'naked' and lets it sit lower and buggier.
  4. Stack and tie in an elk-hair downwing at 65%, tips reaching the end of the tail, and trim the butts to a short stub.
  5. Dub a small thorax ball just in front of the wing.
  6. Tie in a grizzly hackle and wind 4-5 turns through the thorax only, then tie off.
  7. Whip finish, add a drop of cement, and trim any stray fibers.
