Naked Chubby

Dry Fly · Terrestrial · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook long-shank dry / hopper hook (e.g. TMC 5212), #6-14
  • Thread tan (or to match body) 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • 2mm foam Tan or black mm foam (1 slim strip)
  • Holographic flash Silver flashabou (few strands)
  • Poly / para-post wing Dun/gray (tonal) (1 clump)
  • Barred rubber legs Tan/brown rubber legs barred (2 pairs)
  • Ice dub Tan dubbing (pinch (thorax))

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base over the front two-thirds of the shank.
  2. Cut a slim strip of 2mm foam about one hook-gap wide and bind it at the 70% mark, leaving a short stub over the bend. Keep the underbody slim. A lower profile is the whole point of a 'naked' Chubby.
  3. Lay a few strands of holographic flash along each side, then lock the foam down again at the 60% mark to form two body segments.
  4. Tie in a tonal (dun/gray) poly wing at the 60% tie-down, reaching to the end of the tail stub.
  5. Add a pair of rubber legs to each side at the wing tie-down.
  6. Dub a small ice-dub thorax, then fold the remaining foam forward as a bullet head and bind it behind the eye; add the front pair of legs.
  7. Whip finish under the foam head, then trim the wing to just past the bend and the legs to length.
