Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud / emerger, 16-20
  • Thread White 8/0

Materials

  • Antron / Z-lon White / clear antron z lon (few fibers for tail)
  • Superfine dubbing White / pearl superfine dubbing (sparse body)
  • Scud back / midge flex Clear scud back thin skin (1 strip for shellback)
  • Fine wire or mono Clear articulation wire or heavy mono (1 strand for rib)
  • Mono or thread Black mono or thread (tiny eyes / dot)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread and tie in a sparse tuft of white or clear Antron at the bend for the short tail.
  2. Tie in a strip of clear scud back and a strand of clear rib material at the bend, hanging to the rear.
  3. Dub a thin, translucent body of white or pearl Superfine forward, keeping it sparse so the fly stays wispy.
  4. Pull the clear scud back over the top as a shellback and bind it at the eye.
  5. Counter-wrap the rib forward in five or six turns to segment the back, then tie off and clip.
  6. Add a tiny black dot or two for eyes near the front, whip finish and add a thin drop of cement or UV resin over the back.
