Reference Recipe

  • Hook curved scud/pupa hook (e.g. TMC 2457), #16-20
  • Thread white 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Melted mono nubs Black mono or thread (2 tiny eyes)
  • Antron / Z-Lon White poly yarn (sparse pinch (tail + body))
  • Flat tinsel or flash Pearl flashabou (1 strand)
  • Scud back / thin skin Clear scud back thin skin (1 narrow strip)
  • Mono or fine wire Clear/silver fine wire or mono (rib)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thin, smooth thread base from the eye back to the start of the bend. Keep it skinny; mysis are translucent, so bulk kills the look.
  2. At the bend tie in two tiny black melted-mono nubs splayed as eyes, then a very sparse pinch of white Antron a half hook-gap past the bend as the tail.
  3. Tie in the clear mono rib and a strand of pearl flash at the tail, then bind a narrow strip of clear scud back on top to fold forward later.
  4. Wrap the pearl flash forward to the 90% mark for a faint sheen, then dub a slim, sparse white body over it. Half the dubbing you think.
  5. Pull the scud back over the top and bind it behind the eye, tenting it slightly so it reads as a clear shell.
  6. Counter-wrap the mono rib forward in 5-6 open turns to segment and lock the shell, tie off, and snip.
  7. Whip finish, then skim the whole shell with a thin coat of UV resin for a wet, translucent glow and cure.
