Salmon/Steelhead · Salmon · Steelhead · Intermediate · 2 versions

Classic Recipe

  • Hook salmon double or treble, 4-12
  • Thread black 8/0

Materials

  • Tag Oval gold tinsel (3 turns)
  • Body Black floss (1 strand)
  • Rib Oval gold tinsel (1 length)
  • Hackle Hot orange cock with dyed-blue guinea fowl over (1 + 1)
  • Wing Yellow-dyed squirrel or bucktail with black over (2 sparse bunches)

How to tie it

  1. Wind a short gold tag above the hook point.
  2. Tie in the gold rib and wrap a slim black floss body to the 80% mark; rib with 5 evenly spaced turns.
  3. Tie a beard hackle of hot orange cock fibers under the shank, reaching to the hook point.
  4. Add a few fibers of blue-dyed guinea fowl over the orange. The orange-under-blue throat is the fly's signature flash of color.
  5. Tie a sparse wing of yellow-dyed squirrel, then a slightly longer sparse layer of black squirrel over it, extending just past the bend. Keep the wing low and slim.
  6. Build a neat black head, whip finish, and varnish.
