Tyer Recipe

  • Hook 4X-long streamer hook (e.g. TMC 5263), 4-8
  • Thread Olive, black, or brown to match 6/0

Materials

  • Cone or bead head Gold or black bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Marabou Olive/black/brown marabou (tail)
  • Flash Pearl/copper flash (a few strands)
  • Chenille or Estaz Olive/black chenille or estaz (body)
  • Saddle hackle To match body (1 (palmered))
  • Barred rubber legs Barred rubber legs (optional, 1 pair)
  • Deer hair Natural/dyed deer hair (1 bundle (spun collar/head))

How to tie it

  1. Slide a gold cone onto a 4X-long streamer hook, seat it behind the eye, start the thread, and lay a base.
  2. Tie in a marabou tail about one shank-length long at the bend, with a few strands of flash on each side.
  3. Tie in a saddle hackle and a length of chenille (or Estaz) at the bend.
  4. Wrap the chenille forward to just behind the cone, then palmer the hackle forward over it and tie off.
  5. Optionally tie in a set of barred rubber legs along each side.
  6. Stack and spin a bundle of deer hair just behind the cone, letting the tips flare back as a collar and the butts form a small head.
  7. Pack and trim the deer-hair head, whip finish behind the cone, and cement.
