Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly, 12-18
  • Thread Yellow 8/0

Materials

  • Moose body hair Dark moose body hair (6-10 fibers for tail)
  • Poly / Superfine dubbing Yellow-olive poly superfine dubbing (thin noodle)
  • Calf body hair or poly yarn White calf body hair (1 small clump for post)
  • Rooster hackle Grizzly + brown, mixed (2 feathers)

How to tie it

  1. Start the yellow thread. Tie in a clump of white calf body hair (or poly yarn) at the 70% mark as a single upright post; wrap a thread base up the post and back down so it stands firm.
  2. Run the thread to the bend and tie in a short bundle of stacked moose body hair for the tail, one shank length long.
  3. Dub a thin yellow-olive body forward, stopping just short of the post.
  4. Tie in a grizzly and a brown hackle by their stems at the base of the post, shiny side up.
  5. Wind both hackles together around the post parachute-style, four or five turns stacking downward, then secure the tips under the front of the body.
  6. Dub a touch more body in front of the post to cover the wraps, whip finish under the hackle and add a tiny drop of cement, keeping it off the fibers.
