Reference Recipe

  • Hook Wide-gap B10S front hook + short-shank stinger trailer, 1/0 front, size 4 trailer
  • Thread Black GSP / 210 denier flat waxed

Materials

  • Articulated fish spine / shank - (1, 15mm)
  • Stinger trailer hook wire Black wire (short loop)
  • Pine squirrel zonker Natural pine squirrel strip (1 strip for tail)
  • Rabbit zonker strip Natural pine squirrel strip (1 strip for body)
  • Fly tying foam Black craft foam mm (6mm sheet, overbody)
  • Double barrel popper body Black/white material (1 medium, head)
  • Silicone flutter legs Tan/pink cone head (4-6 strands)
  • UV clear resin - (for eyes/coating)

How to tie it

  1. Build a stinger loop of intruder wire on the trailer hook and lock it onto the rear shank so the hook point rides just behind the tail tip, gap up.
  2. Tie in a pine squirrel zonker tail off the back of the rear shank one to two shank lengths long for the swimming tail.
  3. Palmer a rabbit zonker strip forward over the rear shank to build a plush body, stroking the fur back with each wrap so it doesn't trap. Tie off and connect the front hook.
  4. Continue the rabbit strip along the front hook to the 60% mark to make the fat mid-body.
  5. Cap the body with a strip of black foam pulled over the top and bound down in segments to form a floating overback; splay a few silicone legs out each side at the mid-point.
  6. Slide or seat a black double-barrel popper body at the front for the head and lock it in; the foam plus the popper give the built-in floatation.
  7. Add small dots of UV resin for eyes, cure, coat the head, then whip finish and cement behind the head.
