Dry Fly · Trout · Grayling · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 14-16
  • Thread Olive or black 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Fine dry-fly dubbing Olive/olive-black fine dry fly dubbing (pinch (body))
  • Elk or deer hair Natural dun deer hair (small clump (wing))
  • Dry-fly hackle Brown or grizzly hackle (1 feather (optional palmer))

How to tie it

  1. Start thread mid-shank and lay a base to the bend.
  2. Dub a slim olive-black body forward to the 75% mark, keeping it thin to match the small dark natural.
  3. Optionally tie in a brown or grizzly hackle at the bend and palmer it forward through the body in 4-5 open turns, then tie off at 75%.
  4. Clean and stack a small clump of natural dun elk hair and bind it down as a tent-style wing extending just past the bend, tips over the body.
  5. Trim the elk butts to a short stub head at the eye.
  6. Whip finish behind the eye and add a drop of cement to the head.
