Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly, 12-18
  • Thread Gray 8/0

Materials

  • Tail Grizzly hackle fibers (sparse)
  • Body Moose mane (banded)
  • Wing Grizzly hackle tips (upright)
  • Hackle Grizzly hackle (1-2 wraps)

How to tie it

  1. Mount hook, tie in sparse grizzly tail fibers.
  2. Select one light and one dark moose mane hair and wrap them forward together in touching turns, the two hairs alternate into perfect light-dark banding. Tie off at the 65% mark.
  3. Tie in grizzly hackle-tip wings, upright.
  4. Wrap 1-2 turns of grizzly hackle. Whip finish.

Substitutions

  • Body instead of Moose mane: Stripped hackle stem — Similar banded appearance; Quill body substitute — Pre-printed, more durable
  • Wing instead of Grizzly hackle tips: CDC puffs — Lighter, more natural; Gray poly yarn — Simple and visible
