How to tie it
Start olive 140 on the size 14 rear hook and lay a base back to the bend. Wet your fingers, part the fur on a micro zonker strip, and tie it in with only about an inch hanging past the bend. Long trailers are what cause short strikes, and the whole point of the rear hook is to catch those fish.
Tie in the 10mm Olive Mosaic straggle hackle and palmer it forward. This one material does what a complex twist normally takes two to do: a flat, natural-looking yarn plus built-in flash, so you tie in once and wrap once.
Fold the rabbit strip forward over the top, split the hair, take two or three wraps over the hide, tie in a scrap of straggle in front of it, whip finish, and seal with Solarez Bone Dry. Brush the straggle out to free any trapped fibers. The rear section is done.
Swap in the size 10 front hook, build a thread base behind the eye and lock the painted dumbbell eyes on with three X-wraps in each direction, then flood with Zap-A-Gap before adding more cross wraps and lashing around the base. Set them on top of the shank so the fly rides hook point down.
Run the thread to the bend over a full thread base, wire grips thread far better than bare steel. Pass the Beadalon through the rear hook eye, slide on the 3D intruder bead, set your length, and tie the wire down on the near side where you can see it, then fold the tag back on itself and glue. Doubling the wire back is what stops it pulling out under load.
Tie in the front rabbit strip so it bridges the gap seamlessly to the rear strip, fold it back out of the way, then wrap the 14mm straggle hackle forward, figure-eighting over and under the dumbbell eyes so there are no bald spots. Tie off in front of the eyes to keep the head slim.
Fold the rabbit over, secure the hide, then stack a clump of Sculpin Stacker Dub on top and a second underneath, pulling both back with your spare fingers before wrapping in front. Whip finish once, then shape the head with Solarez Bone Dry. It both rounds the profile and keeps fibers out of the hook eye. Finally, trim the bottom clump flat so the belly is clean and the straggle shows through.
