Reference Recipe

  • Hook 1X-long nymph hook, 12-18
  • Thread Black 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Slotted tungsten bead Black nickel bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Pheasant tail fibers Natural/golden brown pheasant tail fibers (small bunch (tail, legs))
  • Copper wire, fine Copper wire (for abdomen and rib)
  • Peacock herl or dark dubbing Natural/black peacock herl or dark dubbing (for thorax)
  • Thin Skin or Krystal Flash Dark wingcase strip (for wingcase)

How to tie it

  1. Seat the tungsten bead behind the eye and start thread behind it.
  2. Tie in a short pheasant-tail tail at the bend, splayed slightly, about a shank long.
  3. Wrap a slim abdomen of copper wire forward to the 55% mark for a fast-sinking, countershaded body, and tie it off.
  4. Tie in a dark wingcase strip and a small bunch of pheasant-tail fibers for legs at the thorax junction.
  5. Build a peacock or dark dubbed thorax to the bead, then pull the wingcase forward over the top and bind it behind the bead so the legs sweep out beneath.
  6. Whip finish behind the bead and add a drop of head cement.
