Morrish Micro Jig Sculpin

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Jig hook with slotted tungsten bead, 8-12
  • Thread Olive or brown 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Slotted tungsten bead Black or copper slotted tungsten bead (1, heavy, sized to hook)
  • Pine squirrel zonker or marabou Olive/brown pine squirrel zonker or marabou (1 short strip/plume (tail))
  • Ice or sculpin dubbing Olive/brown dubbing (for body)
  • Sculpin wool or spun dubbing Olive/brown dubbing (clump (head/collar))
  • Flash Copper/pearl flash (few strands)

How to tie it

  1. Seat the heavy slotted bead behind the eye of the jig hook and start thread behind it.
  2. Tie in a short pine-squirrel or marabou tail at the bend, kept sparse and no longer than a shank so the small fly stays soft-landing.
  3. Add a few strands of flash over the tail, then dub a slim tapered body forward to the 70% mark.
  4. Spin or dub a collar of sculpin wool and stroke it back to make a broad sculpin head/pectoral impression behind the bead.
  5. Sweep all the head fibers rearward, take a few thread turns to pin them back, and whip finish behind the bead.
  6. Trim the head to a flat wedge sculpin profile and add a drop of cement.
