Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved-shank emerger hook (e.g. TMC 2487/2488), 16-20
  • Thread Olive 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Antron/Zelon shuck Amber/olive-gray yarn (small clump (trailing shuck))
  • Fine dry-fly dubbing Olive-brown (abdomen) (pinch)
  • CDC Natural dun cdc feather (1-2 feathers (emerging wing))
  • Fine dry-fly dubbing Olive (thorax) (pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread at mid-shank and run a base down and around the bend so the abdomen will hang below the film.
  2. Tie in a sparse Antron trailing shuck at the bend, no longer than half a shank, to imitate the nymphal skin being shed.
  3. Dub a slim tapered abdomen from the bend forward to the 60% mark, keeping it thin so this half sinks.
  4. Tie in a clump of natural dun CDC pointing forward over the eye as the emerging wing, standing it up with a few wraps at 60%.
  5. Dub a slightly fuller olive thorax in front of and around the base of the wing so the front half floats while the abdomen dangles.
  6. Whip finish at the eye and add a tiny drop of cement, keeping it off the CDC.
