Morningwood Hopper

Terrestrial · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2X-long dry/terrestrial hook (e.g. TMC 5212 / 200R), 8-12
  • Thread Rusty brown 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Fly foam, 2mm Tan/gold foam (1 pre-formed or cut extended body)
  • Poly wing material White (spent) (1 clump)
  • Sexi/round rubber legs Golden yellow, barred rubber legs (2 pair)
  • McFlylon or poly indicator Hot pink laser yarn (small tuft)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread mid-shank on a base of wraps and bind the rear of a foam strip so a segmented extended body projects past the bend one shank length.
  2. Rib the extended body with tight thread cross-wraps to lock the foam segments, then return the thread to the shank.
  3. Tie in a spent white poly wing flat across the top, splayed to each side for a super-floaty footprint.
  4. Figure-8 a pair of barred golden-yellow rubber legs on each side so they splay out and back.
  5. Fold the front foam forward and bind it down to build a blunt foam head at the 85% mark.
  6. Tie in a hot-pink poly indicator tuft on top of the head as a sighter and trim it short.
  7. Whip finish under the foam head and add a drop of cement to the thread.
