Mop chenille Pink chenille (half of one mop finger (one piece makes two flies))
Solarez Bone Dry UV resin Clear uv resin (generous coat)
How to tie it
Start fluorescent pink 70 denier flat thread behind the eye of a size 12 Grub Boss, run it back into the bend and snip the tag. All you are doing is laying a base for the mop to bite into.
Wrap the thread forward to the eye and back to roughly the midpoint of that base, so you are tying in on a doubled, even foundation.
Cut one pink mop finger in half. You get two flies from one piece, and strip some of the fibers off the butt end to expose the core rope underneath. Tying to the bare core rather than through the pile keeps the mount slim and secure.
Bind the exposed core to the shank, then take wraps in front of and behind it. Those front and back wraps trap a few extra fibers and pull the mop down onto the hook so it covers more of the shank.
Whip finish twice and snip. Technically the fly is fishable here, but soak the thread wraps in Solarez Bone Dry and cure. Durability is the whole reason to tie your own rather than buy them.
Finish by burning the tip of the mop with a lighter. It shrinks and rounds the end into a convincing egg shape and leaves a darker scorched spot that reads as a blood dot; press it flat with the lighter body while still hot to make the dot more pronounced.
