Crazy About Fly Fishing dressing

Materials

  • Bead 3.3mm Black Nickle Tungsten
  • Body Super Sparkle Thread - Green
  • Tail Mottled hackle fibers or Coq de Leon
  • Hotspot Veevus Powerthread in Hot Orange 104d

How to tie it

  1. With the 3.3mm Black Nickle Tungsten slotted bead in place on the size 12 Kumho Scud hook, start the Veevus black 8/0 behind the bead and take a few wraps into the slot to catch the bead and hold it there.
  2. Run a thread base back to just a little past the bend, using the tag end to keep the wraps tight and neat; this is a slim-profile fly.
  3. Pinch five or six mottled hackle fibers (or Coq de Leon) from the feather, measure them against the shank to one shank length, and tie them in. Flip them up and grab a wrap underneath as well to keep them splayed.
  4. Wrap the black thread tightly forward to the bead, whip finish and cut it off.
  5. Start the green Super Sparkle Thread, run it back to the tail and wrap forward with it to build a slim but tapered body. Do not let it get too thick. Whip finish twice so it cannot unravel.
  6. Start the Veevus Powerthread in Hot Orange behind the bead for the hotspot, snip the tag nice and close, and go straight into a whip finish, doubled again.
  7. Coat the body and hotspot with a light layer of thin Loon UV Fly Finish, just covering the fly and making it smooth so it cuts through fast water, then cure it with the UV light and clip any stray thread.
