Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet fly, down eye, 6-12
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Red hackle fibers or golden pheasant tippet (tail) Red hackle fibers (small bunch)
  • Flat gold tinsel rib Gold oval tinsel (1 length)
  • Floss body Claret floss (-)
  • Soft hen hackle Claret soft hen hackle (1 feather)
  • Mottled turkey quill (wing) Brown mottled turkey quill (2 matched slips)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread at the eye and run it to the bend; tie in a short red tail about half a shank long.
  2. Tie in flat gold tinsel, then build a smooth claret floss body forward to the 80% mark.
  3. Rib the body with the gold tinsel in 4-5 evenly spaced turns and tie off.
  4. Tie in a soft claret hen hackle and take 2-3 wet-fly wraps, then sweep the fibers back and down as a collar.
  5. Cut two matched slips of mottled brown turkey quill, marry them curving down over the body as a low wing reaching to the tail, and pinch-loop them in place.
  6. Build a small tapered head, whip finish, and cement.
