Materials

  • Red hackle fibers (tail) Red hackle fibers (small bunch)
  • Flat gold tinsel rib Gold oval tinsel (1 length)
  • Peacock herl or claret floss (body) Claret/peacock herl or floss (-)
  • Red hackle (throat) Red neck hackle (1 feather)
  • Gray squirrel tail or brown bucktail (wing) Natural gray/brown squirrel tail or bucktail (1 clump)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread and tie in a short red hackle-fiber tail at the bend, about half a shank long.
  2. Tie in flat gold tinsel for the rib, then build a slim body of claret floss or twisted peacock herl forward to the 80% mark.
  3. Rib the body forward with the gold tinsel in 4-5 evenly spaced turns and tie off.
  4. Tie in a sparse red hackle as a beard/throat under the shank, reaching to the hook point.
  5. Stack a clump of gray squirrel or brown bucktail on top as the wing, extending to just past the bend, and bind it down.
  6. Build a tapered thread head, whip finish, and cement.
