Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry/nymph, straight eye, 20-26
  • Thread Black 8/0 (body) plus fine wire

Materials

  • Tying thread (body) Black thread (-)
  • Fine wire or holographic tinsel rib Silver flashabou (1 length)
  • Poly yarn or Antron (wing/gills) White poly yarn (small tuft)
  • Superfine dubbing (optional thorax) Black dubbing (tiny pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread behind the eye and wrap a smooth, thin thread body back to the bend and forward again to the 70% mark, keeping it slim and slightly tapered.
  2. Tie in fine silver wire or holographic tinsel at the rear and rib the body forward in 5-6 evenly spaced open turns to suggest segmentation; tie off and helicopter the excess.
  3. Tie a very small tuft of white poly on top at the front as a short wing/gill bump, sparse, no longer than a hook eye.
  4. Optional: dub a tiny black thorax bump in front of the wing to lock it upright.
  5. Build a neat thread head, whip finish, and add a pinhead drop of head cement.
