Mount a Daiichi 1710 size 8 that has already been wrapped with 0.020 lead the full length of the shank - Brent pre-weights a box of a hundred at a time - and start the Black 6/0 thread back to the bend. Weighting the whole shank keeps the fly riding flat rather than nose-down.
Pick a Mallard Flank dyed Wood Duck feather with a strong, square-ended tip and strip the weak fibers off the base, then roll a small bunch together dull side up so the tail curves up instead of flaring out to the sides.
Bind the tail in at the bend, short and neat.
Tie the Semperfli Straggle String Peacock Green in at the back and prune the UV fibers back out of the way so the thread traps as few of them as possible.
Wrap the straggle string forward, each turn seated right inside the last, all the way to the front, and tie it off - the UV fibers stand out on their own.
Pinch a chunk of ring-neck pheasant tail fibers on top for the wing, set at the same angle as the hook eye, and bind them with good tight turns; trim the butts off and keep the eye clean.
Turn the hook over, cut a second small bunch of the Mallard Flank dyed Wood Duck and tie it in underneath as a throat, then get the scissors in close and trim the butts.
In place of the original peacock herl head, build a big clean black thread head over all the butt ends and whip finish.
Coat the head with Solarez and cure it under the UV light; a little resin running into the material is fine.
