Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/emerger hook (Daiichi 1135 or similar), #16-20 (tied on a #12 in the video for visibility)
  • Thread Fire orange (UV-sensitive if you can get it) 8/0

Materials

  • Brass bead Gold bead (One, 1/8 inch)
  • Rabbit SLF dubbing blend (body and thorax) Dark olive, or a blend of olive, crimson and kingfisher blue (A small pinch)
  • Mirage tinsel (wing case) Iridescent pearl mirage tinsel (Medium, one strand)
  • Mirage Crystal Flash (rib/body) Iridescent pearl mirror mirage tinsel (One or two strands)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a 1/8 inch brass bead onto a curved scud hook and start fire orange thread behind it.
  2. Lay a thread base and take a light dubbing of rabbit SLF back past the hook point to the bend, finishing with a small dubbed ball at the rear.
  3. At the bend, tie in the medium Mirage tinsel for the wing case and a strand of Mirage Crystal Flash, and bind them down.
  4. Advance the thread to behind the bead, then spiral the Crystal Flash forward over the body in open, even turns and tie it off.
  5. Secure the tinsel out of the way and wax the thread lightly.
  6. Dub a small thorax bump of the SLF blend behind the bead, not a lot, just enough to give the fly a shoulder.
  7. Pull the Mirage tinsel forward over the thorax as a wing pad, tie it down behind the bead and whip finish.
  8. Trim the Crystal Flash tag at the rear to about the length of the body.
