Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL-3XL streamer or wide-gap, 6-10
  • Thread gray 6/0 or GSP

Materials

  • Deer or elk hair Natural gray-brown squirrel guard hair (2-3 clumps)
  • Ultra suede or leather Tan carapace (1 tail strip)
  • Foam Gray foam (optional underbody)
  • Rubber legs Black ostrich herl (2-4)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread at the bend and tie in a thin ultra-suede tail one to two shank lengths long, so it trails and steers the fly.
  2. Optionally tie in a strip of foam along the top for buoyancy.
  3. Spin a clump of deer hair around the shank, pack it tight, and repeat forward in 2-3 clumps, packing hard each time to build a dense body. Add a rubber leg on each side as you go.
  4. Leave a small clear space behind the eye and whip finish.
  5. Trim the spun hair to a rounded mouse-body shape, flat on the bottom and domed on top, leaving a few longer guard hairs at the front as a face.
  6. Add a drop of cement at the thread head to lock it.
