Slide the 3mm Black/Orange Crackle Slotted Tungsten Bead onto the jig hook, start the Black Veevus 14/0 just behind it and build a small thread wedge behind the bead to anchor it in its slot.
Run the thread back down the shank to the last straight portion, then bring it forward again.
Bind in a short length of Medium Black Holographic Tinsel just behind the bead and wrap back over it in smooth, even turns to the end of the thread base, then bring the thread forward.
Wrap the tinsel forward in flat touching turns, rocking it so it lies flat with no lumps, bumps or folds showing; tie it off behind the bead with a few turns and nick the tag out.
Find a spot on the Black Micro Pine Squirrel strip with even fur and wet the fur down. Because this is a jig, bind the strip in fur-side down, right on top of the shank behind the bead, with a tight band of thread.
Set the tail at about twice the shank length - left long it can always be trimmed shorter later.
Choose a Black Ostrich Herl with the longest flue, strip a few fibers off the base of the stem, and tie it in along the near side like a hackle feather, turned so the inside of the feather faces forward and the stem leads the wrap.
Wrap the herl forward into a dense collar right up to the back of the bead, tie off with a couple of turns and nick the end out.
Wet your fingers and sweep the collar back, build a small thread neck behind the bead and whip finish.
Cement the whip finish through the thread: put head cement on the thread, take a few turns to carry it in, then unwind those turns and trim - that keeps the cement off the ostrich.
