Classic Recipe

  • Hook Barbless standard dry-fly hook (Tiemco TMC 100 or Fulling Mill barbless dry), #12
  • Thread Black 8/0 / 70 denier

Materials

  • Body 2mm black foam, segmented (1 strip)
  • Underbody (optional) Black or peacock Ice Dub (or a strand of flash) (pinch)
  • Legs Barred black round rubber legs (2-3 per side)
  • Wing/indicator White or orange poly-yarn post (for visibility) (small clump)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread; add a strand of underbody flash/dub if used.
  2. Cut a thin strip of 2mm black foam about 1.5x hook length and one gap wide; tie it in at the rear and segment it forward with thread locks to form a small foam body ending near the eye.
  3. Figure-8 in barred black rubber legs at the mid-body so they splay out and flop.
  4. Tie in a short poly-yarn wing/indicator post for visibility.
  5. Fold the front foam to form a small head, tie off, whip finish; trim legs to length.
